The Information Society and Global Information Infrastructure Section Was Convened at the Crimea−2012 Conference under the Aegis of the UNESCO Information for All Programme

The Russian Committee of the UNESCO Information for All Programme and the Interregional Library Cooperation Centre became co-organizers of the Section Information Society and Global Information Infrastructure, which was convened on June 5, 2012, under the aegis of the Intergovernmental UNESCO Information for All Programme at the 19th International Crimea 2012 Conference (Sudak, Autonomous Republic of Crimea, Ukraine).

The Section was dedicated to the challenges that the libraries are facing at the current stage of the global information society development. Evgeny Kuzmin, Chairman of the Intergovernmental Council and the Russian Committee of the UNESCO Information for All Programme, and President of the Interregional Library Cooperation Centre, opened the Section and spoke about the UNESCO policy and priorities of IFAP from the perspective of the information society and the knowledge societies.

The main aspects of the policy and the most valuable experience, which has been accumulated by various countries in the field of digital information preservation, were described in the paper by Tatyana Murovana, Executive Secretary of the Russian IFAP Committee.

Nataliya Gendina, Director of the Research Institute of Information Technologies in the Social Sphere, Kemerovo State University of Culture and Arts, member of the Russian IFAP Committee, informed the Section of the latest trends in the development of media and information literacy in view of the need to train individuals to live in the information society.

The development of linguistic diversity in the cyberspace and the significance of multilingualism for the entire world were highlighted by Anastasiya Parhsakova, Project Coordinator of the Russian IFAP Committee.

The paper by Leonid Kuibyshev, Director General of the Centre on the Problems of Informatisation in the Sphere of Culture (Centre PIC), was dedicated to Europeana and participation of Russia's cultural institutions in its development project.

The 19th International Conference Crimea 2012 − Libraries and Information Resources in the Modern World of Science, Culture, Education and Business − was held on June 2-10, 2012, in the town of Sudak and in some other Crimean towns. This year, its theme was Libraries in the Digital Era: A New Paradigm and New Role in the Development of Societies.

The Crimea Conferences have developed into a global professional forum for the experts and directors of libraries, publishing houses, book traders, information centers, museums, archives, institutions of culture, science and education, computer companies and Internet providers, business and law.

Crimean Conferences focus on the conditions of libraries and their development prospects, including development on the basis of information, computer and Internet technologies; legal and business information; development of cooperation between libraries, on one hand, and scientific, cultural, educational, publishing, book trading and distribution companies, on the other hand.

Evgeny Kuzmin, Chairman of the Intergovernmental Council and the Russian IFAP Committee, and President of the Interregional Library Cooperation Centre, is Chairman of the Programme Committee of this Conference. He addressed the audience at the Official Opening Ceremony and took the chair at the closing meeting.
